Building Food Security and Resilience Through Digital Innovation
blueEnergy’s mission is to work hand-in-hand with local communities in the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua to co-create sustainable solutions for energy access, water sanitation, and food security. Through education and collaboration, blueEnergy empowers individuals to build resilience, improve their quality of life, and address the pressing challenges of climate change.
Overview
In collaboration with blueEnergy, the Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University (BICU), and local families, with funding support from Meal-a-Day, eResponders developed interactive eLearning modules to address food security and agroecology practices amidst the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. This innovative project enabled inclusive, online learning opportunities while promoting sustainable agriculture and community empowerment in Nicaragua’s South Caribbean Coast.
The Challenge
The Autonomous Region of the Southern Caribbean Coast (RACCS) in Nicaragua faces economic challenges and climate vulnerability, which impact education and food security. Despite these barriers, the region’s rich tradition of local agricultural knowledge serves as a strong foundation for resilience and innovation.
Recognizing this strength, an accessible solution was developed to document and digitize traditional agricultural practices. The eModules combine this valuable knowledge with modern agro-ecological methods, ensuring it is preserved and made widely accessible for families, educators, and students to improve food production, soil management, and climate resilience.

Bluefields is located on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. It is a bustling multicultural and multilingual port town surrounded by tropical rainforest where different indigenous, Afro-descendant and mestizo ethnic groups converge. It is celebrated throughout Nicaragua for its Caribbean music, gastronomy and natural beauty. Bluefields is part of an autonomous territory that seeks the sustainable development of its communities, opening the path to people to develop knowledge and skills in scientific, social and cultural studies. Our operations are located on the campus of Bluefields Indian & Caribbean University and partners with the Innovation Department to source and develop young talent.
Our Solution
Interactive eLearning Modules
Based on blueEnergy’s Caja de Herramientas para huertos caribeños, four interactive modules were created to teach micro-scale food production adapted to the Caribbean environment.
Inclusive Content
Multimedia materials were accessible to all literacy levels, combining engaging visuals, real-life agroecology videos, interactive exercises, and an open-source platform to ensure community-wide accessibility and future use.
Community-Led Development
Local beneficiaries co-created scripts, storyboards and multimedia materials, ensuring cultural relevance, inclusion and accessibility.
Collaborative Learning Spaces
Students from BICU worked as interns to developing the modules and configuring the Moodle-based digital platform Academia Green Coast, which was piloted by local schools and families to gather feedback for continuous improvement.
A Sustainable Future
By bridging technology, education, and local expertise, the project laid a foundation for long-term resilience in food security and climate action. The success of this collaboration highlights eResponders’ commitment to supporting organizations and communities to drive meaningful, sustainable change.
