Interactive, Inclusive, and Impactful: Signal Success Goes Online

YouthWorks is a program of the Commonwealth Corporation that connects young people in Massachusetts with job opportunities and skill-building experiences. Through training, work placements, and career readiness education, YouthWorks helps youth—especially those facing barriers to employment—build the confidence, habits, and skills they need to thrive in the workforce.

Overview

YouthWorks partnered with eResponders to bring Signal Success online. What began as a project to develop ten Tier 1 modules quickly expanded into a full-scale collaboration. In the end, we co-created 20 interactive eLearning modules—10 for Tier 1 and 10 for Tier 2—alongside custom illustrations, character sets, and a visual style that reflects the diversity of the youth they serve.

The Need and Challenges

YouthWorks needed to translate a dynamic in-person curriculum into an engaging digital format. Their learners are diverse in language, identity, and life experience—so accessibility and cultural relevance were critical. They also wanted to build internal capacity to support future learning initiatives and ensure consistency with Commonwealth Corporation branding.

Our Solution

We led the full production process while also mentoring YouthWorks’ instructional designer in script writing and storyboard development for eLearning. Together, we co-developed content that centers youth voices and mirrors real-life scenarios.

To support authentic connection with learners, we co-created a full cast of characters and illustrated environments that reflect diverse racial, gender, and socio-economic identities. These became the foundation for scenario-based activities designed to spark reflection and practical skill-building.

 Each module was built in Articulate Storyline 360 and included:

  • Custom illustrations, animation, and video
  • Voiceover in English with Spanish subtitles
  • Interactive knowledge checks
  • ADA and WCAG-compliant design
  • A consistent visual identity aligned with YouthWorks and Commonwealth Corporation branding

The digital Signal Success curriculum is now a scalable, engaging training resource used across the state. By combining strategic storytelling with accessible design and cross-team collaboration, we helped YouthWorks deliver training that supports equity, self-reflection, and long-term success for young people.
